The Child Visa (Subclass 802) allows an eligible parent to sponsor their child to live in Australia permanently. Parents can apply for this visa on behalf of a child under 18 years of age.
With this visa, the child can:
Live in Australia indefinitely
Enrol in Medicare (Australia’s public health care system)
Travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted
After five years, the child will need to obtain a valid visa to re-enter Australia.
The child’s sponsor is usually their parent, who must be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
In some cases, the spouse or de facto partner of the child’s parent can also act as the sponsor, provided they meet the same eligibility requirements — being an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
The sponsor must be an Australian citizen, the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
The child must also meet specific health and character requirements to be eligible for this visa.
